Frequently Asked Questions When Relocating To Ibiza
It's understandable for families wishing to relocate to worry about practical issues such as the options regarding how their children will be educated, medical provisions and even what to do about the pets... At EverythingIbiza we are dedicated to providing our customers with not only the home they are looking for but peace of mind once they arrive to begin their new life on the island.
Although sometimes time consuming it is normally quite straight forward to personally arrange everything your family will need to live in Ibiza. The following is a comprehensive guide to some of the most frequently asked questions we have experienced.
NIE NUMBER & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
If you are a British Citizen or British Subject with Right of Abode in the United Kingdom, you do not require a visa to enter Spain. Other British Nationals should confirm the current entry requirements with their nearest Spanish Embassy.A valid British passport must be held for entry to and exit from Spain. There is no minimum passport validity requirement but you should ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your visit.
All British Nationals are required to have a valid NIE number (Número de Identificación Extranjeros) in order to buy property in Ibiza. This can be obtained from the Commisaria de Policia in Ibiza Town and although involves a wait is quite straight forward.
Applicants are required to fill out a form and present both a photocopy of, and the original of their passport on the day. However should you not feel comfortable trying out this first piece of classic Spanish bureaucracy on your own then we can provide you with an interpreter/expert who charges a flat rate of €150 to go with you.
SCHOOLS
Education is obligatory for all children aged 6-16 if the parents are legally resident in Spain and is free from pre-school to 18 years. There are plenty of good schools for all ages in Ibiza and they welcome children from foreign countries quite readily. The majority of Spanish state schools have taken into account the influx of foreigners and have made provisions for extra Spanish lessons above and beyond the Spanish curriculum. Children will generally not be moved up to the next curso (year) until the teachers think they are ready. Studying in an international environment such as this has shown to be extremely beneficial for children, who have a natural ability to grasp foreign languages and concepts much quicker than us adults!
Enrolling in a Spanish school requires an interview. New arrivals in Spain must have their children's education record verified, this is called convalidation. A pupil will not be accepted without the necessary paperwork so it is best to get this done before arriving in Spain so the child can immediately enter upon arrival in the country.
To enrol you must also have:
· Proof of convalidation (see above)
· Your child's birth certificate or passport, proof of immunization;
· Certificado de Empadronamiento - This form is easily attained from your town hall and can be sought once you have proof of residence eg, a bill in your name or anything such as a rental agreement containing your address.
· Passport-size photograph (for a student ID card) for a child entering secondary school.
HEALTHCARE
Ibiza has an excellent standard of public healthcare which is available to all residents no matter how long they have been on the Island. Once you have your NIE number you will be able to register with your local Ambulatorio who will provide you with your medical card and a choice of doctors in your local area. Private Healthcare is also available and can be contracted privately with various companies.
PETS
As with the Healthcare for us, the provisions for our animals here in Ibiza is also excellent. There are a wide number of Vets in every area who very often speak English and are very helpful. You will also find that the cost of looking after your pet here is much lower than in the UK.
